NASAMS (Norwegian Advanced Surface to Air Missile System) is a distributed and networked medium to long range air-defense system. The NASAMS was the first surface-based application of the AIM-120 AMRAAM (Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile) and the first ground-to-air missile system in the western world with active radar guidance. The missile itself is named SL-AMRAAM (Surfaced Launched AMRAAM)
Capabilities:
- Ceiling: 15000 m (49213 ft)
- Range: 33000 m (108.296 ft)
- Number of simultaneously acquired targets - 54
Each NASAMS battery consists of 3 Hughes TPQ-36A 3-dimensional radars, 3 NFT fire-distribution centers, and up to 9 launchers, each with 6 AMRAAMS. The fire units would be linked to each other and the missiles can be remote-controlled up to 15 miles away from the command centers.
The NASAMS has been implemented in the Norwegian Air Force. Also, Spain has upgraded its NASAMS II system which was delivered in 2004. Greece, Turkey and the USA also purchased NASAMS in order to protect their land infrastructure. Furthermore, it was ordered by NATO – IRF (Immediate Reaction Forces).
