In 2008, the Polish MoD signed an agreement with Kongsberg Defense and Aerospace on the supply of equipment for the Coastal Defense Missile Squadron of the Polish Navy with the NSM missile as its main armament. According to the Agreement, 12 missiles must be purchased with an option for further at a later date.

The NSM (Naval Strike Missile) is a fourth-generation long-range anti-ship missile with Imaging Infrared seeker and excellent stealth and sea-skimming capabilities in rugged coastal areas. The NSM is designed to operate from a wide range of platforms such as ships, trucks, armored vehicles and airborne weapon carriers. Important requirements for the booster rocket motor include low weight, high performance and low radar signature. The missile, designed by Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace in co-operation with Lockheed Martin can, as the Joint Strike Missile version (JSM), be carried by the 5th generation F-35 multipurpose aircraft.
